The First Three Rounds Are Mostly Settled. Here Is Where They Are Not.

Why the top of the board is boring

The players available in the first dozen picks are, almost by definition, the ones with the least uncertainty. They have proven workloads, established roles, and multi-year production histories. There is not much for three independent methods to disagree about.

That is worth saying plainly, because the agreement gets misread as authority. Our board matching ESPN on a first-round pick does not mean the ranking is correct — it means the question was easy.

The 2025 season makes the point. Justin Jefferson went into that year ranked second on our board and third by ESPN. He played all 17 games and finished 55th overall, 21st among receivers. Malik Nabers was sixth on our board and ninth at ESPN, and played four games. Both were consensus picks in the truest sense, and neither cost anyone a decision — there was nothing to decide.

Consensus reduces the chance of an obvious mistake. It does nothing about variance.

Where the disagreements actually live

Rounds two and three, for a structural reason. That is where the board fills with two groups whose valuations depend on which number you trust: players coming off injury-shortened seasons, and players coming off touchdown totals that will not repeat.

Injury-shortened seasons produce gaps in the market's favor, because sportsbooks price a per-game rate while average draft position anchors to a season total. Twenty-one players inside the top 100 played 13 games or fewer last year, and most of them are priced by the room using the wrong number.

Touchdown outliers produce gaps in the other direction. A back or receiver who scored well above his usage in 2025 carries an ADP set by that finish, while the posted props have already regressed the touchdown line. That is the most common reason our board sits behind the draft room on a popular player.
