Southern Miss Is One of the Worst Teams in FBS — But UConn's Road Woes Make This a Trap Game

Let's start with the Southern Miss offense, because it demands attention — and not the good kind. On the ground, they're averaging just 50 rush yards per game (#127) on 2.0 yards per carry (#124). They've converted zero fourth downs this season (#999) and zero field goals (#999). Their turnover margin sits at -1 per game. They're committing 11 penalties a game (#129), burning 85 penalty yards per contest (#127). By nearly every offensive metric, Southern Miss is competing for last place in FBS.

Their defense isn't much better. Opponents are averaging 43 points (#120) and 610 yards per game (#134) against them. The Golden Eagles are allowing 343 rush yards per game (#137) — that's not a typo — and opponents are running the ball at a 60% clip against them (#113). They haven't forced an interception yet this season (#999 in opponent INT rate). About the only bright spot: they're holding opponents to a 60% red zone scoring rate, which ranks 12th nationally, and they're drawing fewer opponent penalties than most teams.

So why isn't UConn a runaway pick here? A few reasons.

No signal badges are firing. No algorithmic line movement signals are active. There's no insider system data for this matchup. The market hasn't moved significantly enough to suggest organized money on either side.

The honest read: Southern Miss is objectively terrible on both sides of the ball. If UConn has any functional offense, they should cover a 3-point spread. But without UConn's stats, and given their documented ATS struggles on the road, fading a team this bad still carries risk.
